Prospects For Attaining Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG-6) And The CWSA Level Of Water Coverage In Rural Ghana

Mr. Adokor painted a mixed outlook for the Ghanaian rural dweller in water provision in the context of the expectations of CWSA in meeting the objective of Sustainable Development Goal 6. On a positive note, he said, “As at the end of 2020, safe water coverage for populations residing in rural communities and small towns was 62.47%, according to CWSA’s database. We estimate that those populations will be around 23 million people and we have been able to serve about 14.9 million people with the gab of about 8.6 million yet to be served.”

… a person is said to be covered if there is water facility on your premise or you walk in and out for about 30 minutes or for a distance of about 500 meters to get water. So, if you walk more than 30 minutes in and out, it means that you are not covered by the water facility.

He continued, “We have done this by constructing over 32,000 boreholes with hand pumps and over 1,300 pipe schemes across the country. In using the CWSA’s provider-based statistics to calculate coverage, a person is said to be covered if there is a water facility on your premises or you walk in and out for about 30 minutes or for a distance of about 500 meters to get water. So, if you walk more than 30 minutes in and out, it means that you are not covered by the water facility.”
