Mahama Directs Expansion of Security Services Recruitment

Date:

President John Dramani Mahama has directed an increase in recruitment into Ghana’s security services as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s security architecture.

The directive was issued after the President held a high-level meeting with the Heads of Security Agencies, the Minister for the Interior, and the Acting Minister for Defence to review the ongoing recruitment process.

According to a statement from the Presidency Communications Office dated Monday, March 16, 2026, the President ordered that the number of personnel to be recruited into the various security agencies be increased from 20,000 to 40,000 over a four-year period.

The move is expected to boost manpower across the security services and improve the country’s capacity to respond to emerging security challenges.

President Mahama also directed the heads of the security agencies to ensure transparency and fairness throughout the recruitment process.

The meeting brought together key officials within the national security and defence architecture, including the Chief of Staff, the Secretary to the President, the Senior Presidential Advisor on Governmental Affairs, and the National Security Coordinator.

Also present were the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, the Director-General of the Ghana National Fire Service, the Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service, and the Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission.

The directive forms part of the government’s broader efforts to enhance national security and expand employment opportunities for the country’s youth.

The statement was signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.
